Independent Non-Medical Prescriber Role Summary

As an Independent Non-Medical Prescriber (NMP) , youll be an integral part of a multidisciplinary and multi-agency team delivering recovery-focused drug and alcohol treatment. Youll use your clinical expertise to assess individual needs, make safe and evidence-based prescribing decisions and support people to achieve the best possible outcomes from treatment.

Working within your professional scope of practice, youll assess, diagnose, plan and review treatment, including initiating and amending prescriptions for opiate and alcohol substitute treatment and other associated medication. Youll develop individual clinical management plans alongside Recovery Coordinators, assess suitability for detoxification and continually review treatment to ensure it remains safe, effective and responsive to the persons needs.

Youll provide clear information about prescribed, illicit and over-the-counter medicines, including potential side effects and interactions, helping people make informed decisions about their treatment. Youll also identify wider physical and mental health needs, respond appropriately to complex or urgent clinical situations and support access to services including BBV vaccination, immunisation and health promotion.

Strong communication is essential. Youll build effective relationships with people using our services, carers, colleagues and external partners, adapting your communication where needed and ensuring people are fully informed and able to consent to treatment. Youll advocate for service users and help create coordinated care across organisational and professional boundaries.

Clinical quality and governance

Youll work in line with professional standards, national prescribing competencies, clinical guidance and Change Grow Live policies. Accurate and contemporaneous clinical records, effective workload management and a strong approach to clinical governance will be central to the role.

Youll contribute to audit, evaluation and quality improvement, using evidence, peer review and shared learning to strengthen clinical practice. Youll also understand and apply safeguarding legislation and procedures for children and adults at risk.

Leadership and collaboration

This is more than an individual prescribing role. Youll help develop prescribing practice within the service, act as a source of clinical expertise for colleagues and partner agencies and promote the role of the NMP across the wider team.

Youll contribute to staff development and training, participate in clinical and peer supervision and identify opportunities to improve how care is delivered. Youll work collaboratively with colleagues, support safe delegation and contribute to new and improved ways of working.

Youll also manage clinical risk within your area of responsibility, contribute to safe working practices and use clinical information and data effectively to support care planning, monitoring, audit and service improvement.

What youll bring

Youll be a qualified Non-Medical Prescriber and either:

•

A qualified pharmacist with current GPhC registration and at least two years post-qualification experience; or

•

A first-level registered nurse with a current NMC PIN and at least three years post-qualification experience.

Youll also need at least one year of recent, relevant experience within substance misuse treatment , together with a strong understanding of clinical prescribing, harm reduction, health promotion and the wider health and social issues affecting people who use drugs or alcohol.

Youll be confident undertaking relevant physical examinations, interpreting appropriate medical test results, assessing and recovery planning with service users and maintaining high-quality clinical documentation. Strong communication, administration and clinical audit skills are also essential. The role requires a full driving licence and access to transport, or the ability to demonstrate that you can travel easily between services where required.

Experience of motivational interviewing, knowledge of local services and geography, and a postgraduate drugs and/or alcohol qualification are desirable.

The role is subject to an Enhanced DBS check where regulated activity is undertaken and requires flexibility to work across operational sites. Depending on service requirements, this may include some evening and weekend working.
