Trainee Pharmacy Jobs UK 2026: Who Is Advertising in September

A late-September re-read of PharmSee's vacancy data finds trainee or apprentice titles on 164 of 1,868 adverts, none of them from the four supermarket operators tracked.

A late-September re-read of PharmSee's live vacancy database finds that 164 of 1,868 tracked pharmacy adverts (8.8%) carry the word "trainee" or "apprentice" in the job title. None of them was placed by Tesco, Asda, Morrisons or Superdrug, the four supermarket-style operators in the dataset.

The result tests a suggestion made in PharmSee's June analysis of supermarket trainee adverts: that supermarket pharmacies might recruit trainees in cohorts timed to the academic year, so a September snapshot could look different from a June one. In the feeds PharmSee tracks, it does not.

Who is advertising trainee roles

The table counts adverts with "trainee" or "apprentice" in the title in PharmSee's snapshot of 28 September 2026, across the 11 sources it monitors.

Three employers (Well, Rowlands and Boots) account for 156 of the 164 adverts, or 95%.

Job titles vary. Most of Well's adverts (87 of 94) use the dual label "Trainee or Qualified Pharmacy Assistant", which signals the vacancy is open to either; seven are trainee-only. Rowlands's are mostly "Trainee Pharmacy Dispenser" (28 of 32), and all 30 of the Boots UK adverts read "Trainee Dispenser". The single Cohens advert is a trainee pharmacist programme with intakes in July and October 2027, a pre-registration route rather than a support-staff role.

The six NHS Jobs adverts comprise three pre-registration trainee pharmacy technician posts, one apprenticeship-grade version of the same role, one "Dispenser or Trainee Dispenser" post at a GP partnership and one entry-level apprenticeship post at an acute trust.

What pay is shown

Of the 164 adverts, 108 (66%) show a pay figure. Rowlands states £12.82 an hour on all 32 of its trainee-titled adverts. Well shows a figure on 71 of 94, most commonly £12.71 an hour (62 adverts); because its dual-label adverts cover both trainee and qualified staff, that rate may not be specific to trainees.

The Boots UK feed states contract hours on its trainee adverts but no pay figure; pay may be set out elsewhere in the recruitment process. NHS Jobs shows a figure on five of six: four annual figures ranging from £15,600 to £28,850, and one hourly range of £13.00 to £13.94. With only six adverts, that illustrates a range rather than establishing a rate.

What the supermarket operators advertise instead

Tesco, Asda, Morrisons and Superdrug had 203 live adverts between them on 28 September, the same combined total as in PharmSee's 5 June snapshot, although the mix has shifted. Most notably, the number of Morrisons adverts visible to PharmSee has fallen, as PharmSee reported earlier this month. The June snapshot found one trainee-titled advert among the four operators, and a count later that month found two, both at Superdrug. On 28 September there were none.

Entry-level posts are still advertised, but under other titles:

Together these 65 adverts are 32% of the 203, against 40 of 194 (21%) in PharmSee's late-June count on a broadly similar grouping of titles. The grouping is by title only, so it is an indication rather than a measure.

Two of the labels are hard to read. "Dispenser NVQ" at Superdrug refers to a qualification, but the feed does not show whether applicants must already hold it or would work towards it. "Pharmacy Colleague" at Asda does not say whether training is provided. None of the 203 supermarket adverts shows a pay figure: Morrisons's read "competitive salary", Tesco's and Asda's are blank, and Superdrug's feed carries a placeholder rather than a rate.

Some operators may also recruit counter and dispensary staff through general store-colleague channels or separate apprenticeship pages that a pharmacy-specific feed does not capture. Superdrug's careers site, for example, lists apprenticeships as a separate section.

What has changed since June

PharmSee's 19 June count of trainee-titled adverts, in its analysis of the two entry routes into pharmacy, gives a comparison for the larger employers:

Cohens Chemist: 27 then, 1 now.

The Cohens figure needs care. Over the same period the number of Cohens adverts visible to PharmSee fell from 89 in early June to 15, so the drop reflects a much smaller set of visible adverts and should not be read as evidence of a change in trainee hiring. The reason for the fall cannot be established from public data.

Reading the market if you are looking for a way in

A search for "trainee" finds most openings at three employers but misses entry-level posts advertised as "Dispenser", "Pharmacy Colleague" or "Dispenser NVQ". Searching several of those labels on PharmSee's live jobs board and checking each advert for training arrangements gives a fuller picture, and the pharmacy directory shows which employers operate near you.

What the data does and does not show

Titles only. A post titled "Dispenser" may be open to trainees, and a trainee post may not use the word. Counts describe how roles are labelled, not who is hired.
Eleven sources. PharmSee tracks national multiples, supermarket pharmacies and NHS Jobs. Independent pharmacies are not covered, so the figures describe those employers rather than the whole UK market.
Adverts are not posts. One advert can cover several vacancies, and the same post can appear more than once.
One day's snapshot. The data reflects the scrape of 28 September 2026 and will change as adverts open and close.
A correction. PharmSee's 5 June article on supermarket trainee adverts stated that Boots and Well carried no trainee-titled adverts. That was incorrect. The count relied on a per-employer view that returns at most 200 adverts, and both employers hold more than 200. A keyword search across the full dataset, which returned 163 trainee-titled adverts (below the 200 limit, so complete for that word), finds 30 at Boots UK and 94 at Well Pharmacy.
