Pharmacy Technician Salary UK 2026: What the Job Listings Show

From NHS bands to community hourly rates, what pharmacy technicians actually earn — and how ACT qualification changes the picture.

By PharmSee · · 1 views

Pharmacy technicians are the backbone of dispensing operations across the NHS and community pharmacy sectors. But what do they actually earn? PharmSee's analysis of current job listings reveals a wide range — from under £14 per hour in community pharmacy to over £30,000 in NHS trust roles, with the accuracy checking technician (ACT) qualification commanding a measurable premium.

NHS pharmacy technician salaries

Among 18 pharmacy technician postings on NHS Jobs with parseable salary data — drawn from a 200-item sample of 513 total postings on the platform — the median advertised salary is £30,510. The range spans from approximately £16,000 for part-time or entry-level roles to over £56,000 for senior specialist positions.

Most NHS technician roles sit within Band 4 (£26,530–£29,114) or Band 5 (£29,970–£36,483) of the Agenda for Change framework. Senior and specialist technicians — particularly those with ACT qualification working in clinical checking roles — can reach Band 6.

Community pharmacy technician pay

Community pharmacy employers are less transparent about pay, but some chains do publish hourly rates. Based on current listings tracked by PharmSee:

EmployerRoleHourly Rate
Well PharmacyPharmacy Technician£13.85
Well PharmacyAccuracy Checking Technician£15.85
RowlandsAccuracy Checking Technician£16.53 + £1.87 supplement

At £13.85 per hour for a standard 37.5-hour week, a full-time community pharmacy technician at Well earns approximately £27,007 per year before tax. An ACT at Rowlands on £16.53 + £1.87 per hour earns approximately £35,984 — a 33% premium over the base technician rate.

These figures are based on a small number of listings that publish rates. Most community pharmacy employers, including Boots, do not disclose technician pay in their job postings. Boots's 200-item sample tracked by PharmSee contains zero pharmacy technician titles — the chain appears to use "Dispenser" as its primary non-pharmacist job title.

The ACT premium

The accuracy checking technician qualification is the single most valuable credential for pharmacy technicians seeking higher pay. The data consistently shows a £2–£3 per hour premium in community pharmacy, and progression to Band 5 or 6 in the NHS.

Among community chain listings tracked by PharmSee, ACTs earn:

  • Well: £15.85/hr (vs £13.85 base technician) — £2.00/hr premium
  • Rowlands: £16.53/hr + £1.87 supplement (vs £13.14 + £1.87 base assistant) — £3.39/hr premium

Over a full-time year, the ACT premium translates to approximately £3,900–£6,600 in additional earnings, depending on employer and hours worked.

What the data doesn't show

PharmSee tracks 11 job sources, none of which are specialist pharmacy technician recruitment agencies. The NHS Jobs sample represents 39% of all postings on that platform (200 of 513). Community pharmacy salary data is limited to the minority of employers who publish rates.

The figures above should be treated as a snapshot of publicly advertised rates, not a comprehensive salary survey. Internal promotions, regional adjustments, and individually negotiated rates are not captured.

Caveats

Sample sizes are small (n=18 for NHS technician roles) and should be read as directional indicators. Hourly community rates are drawn from a handful of employers who publish pay; the majority do not.
