The UK pharmacy sector is actively recruiting across all levels, from dispensing assistants to senior clinical pharmacists. PharmSee's tracking of 11 public job sources captures 1,383 active vacancies as of 12 April 2026 — a snapshot of a labour market shaped by NHS workforce expansion, community pharmacy pressures, and shifting employer strategies.

The big picture: 1,383 vacancies across 11 sources

Two employers — Boots and NHS Jobs — account for more than three quarters of all tracked vacancies. This concentration reflects both the scale of these organisations and the fact that smaller independent pharmacies typically recruit through local networks rather than national job boards.

What Boots is hiring

Boots dominates the vacancy count, but the composition is revealing. In a 200-item sample of its 543 postings:

  • Dispensers: 129 roles (64.5%)
  • Pharmacists: 56 roles (28.0%)
  • Managers: 7 roles (3.5%)
  • Other: 8 roles (4.0%)
  • Pharmacy technicians: 0 roles (0%)

The absence of pharmacy technician titles in Boots listings has persisted across multiple PharmSee data captures. The chain appears to subsume what other employers call "technician" under its "dispenser" title category — a naming convention that may obscure the true demand for qualified technicians. None of the Boots listings include a salary figure.

What NHS Jobs reveals

NHS Jobs is the richest source for salary data, as NHS employers are required to list Agenda for Change band information. Among 200 postings sampled:

  • Clinical pharmacists: 51 roles, median salary £47,810
  • Pharmacists: 35 roles, median salary £56,276
  • Technicians: 18 roles, median salary £30,510
  • Dispensers: 9 roles
  • Managers: 4 roles, median salary £49,742

The NHS sample is capped at 200 of 513 total postings (39%), so these figures represent a partial picture.

Supermarket pharmacy: a distinctive model

Tesco's approach stands out. Of 43 vacancies, the majority are titled "Duty Pharmacy Manager" — a uniform title that implies every Tesco pharmacist carries managerial responsibility. The chain also lists dispensers, a pharmacy technician, and several pharmacy manager roles, suggesting a broader staffing model than the "Duty Pharmacy Manager" title alone would imply.

Asda lists 54 vacancies, predominantly pharmacist and coordinator roles. Morrisons lists 33, all pharmacist positions advertising "competitive salary, plus excellent benefits" without specific figures.

The employers PharmSee doesn't track

PharmSee monitors 11 public job sources. This means several significant pharmacy employers are not captured, including:

  • Lloyds Clinical Homecare and other homecare providers (Sciensus, Alcura, Polar Speed)
  • Independent pharmacies that recruit locally or through word of mouth
  • Locum agencies (the entire locum market is invisible to public job boards)
  • Hospital trusts that recruit through their own portals rather than NHS Jobs

The 1,383 figure should therefore be understood as a floor, not a ceiling. The true number of open pharmacy positions in the UK is likely significantly higher.

What this means for job seekers

The data suggests a market with strong demand across all levels, particularly for dispensers and pharmacists. Candidates seeking salary transparency should prioritise NHS roles, which consistently publish band information. Those considering community pharmacy should be prepared to negotiate, as most employers do not disclose pay upfront.
