A job title search for "pharmacy manager" on a UK job board is usually a plain enough phrase. At one employer it becomes something more specific: "Pharmacy Manager (Non Pharmacist Manager)." That isn't a data-capture error. According to PharmSee's analysis of live job adverts on 11 September 2026, Rowlands Pharmacy is the only major community pharmacy employer PharmSee tracks that states, in the job title itself, whether a manager post requires a GPhC-registered pharmacist.
Of 172 live Rowlands vacancies in PharmSee's job-tracking database that day, eight carried the exact title "Pharmacy Manager (Non Pharmacist Manager)." A parallel search across the ten other employers PharmSee tracks — Boots, Well, Superdrug, Tesco, Asda, Morrisons, Cohens, Weldricks, Day Lewis and NHS Jobs, a combined sample of more than 1,600 live listings that day — found no equivalent wording anywhere.
What the title is actually signalling
Under the Human Medicines Regulations 2012, every community pharmacy in Great Britain must have a named, GPhC-registered Responsible Pharmacist in charge whenever it is open to the public. That is a legal designation tied to specific trading hours, not a job title. Running the pharmacy day to day — rotas, stock, staffing, targets, customer service — is a separate operational function that an employer can, if it chooses, give to someone who is not a pharmacist, provided a registered pharmacist still holds the Responsible Pharmacist role during opening hours.
Rowlands' "Non Pharmacist Manager" title appears to describe exactly that split: an operational management post, paid on a different basis to a pharmacist, sitting alongside — rather than instead of — the pharmacist who carries the regulatory responsibility.
How the other employers title the same split
PharmSee checked whether any of the ten other tracked employers flagged registration status in the manager job title itself. None did, though the wording several use leans one way or the other.

Several employers default to "Pharmacist Manager" as their standard title, which reads as a pharmacist-only post by construction, even though the advert doesn't spell out the registration requirement. Others — Superdrug, Morrisons and Tesco's "Duty Pharmacy Manager" — leave the point open. A candidate would need to read the person specification, not the headline title, to find out whether GPhC registration is actually required.
What the Rowlands non-pharmacist role pays
Pay disclosure across the eight Rowlands listings was mixed. One advert, for a branch in Cheshire (CW6), stated a specific combined rate: £13.02 an hour plus a £1.44-an-hour supplement, for £14.46 an hour in total. The remaining seven adverts disclosed only the £1.44 supplement on top of an unstated internal pay-point rate, so a like-for-like hourly figure isn't available across the full sample.
That single disclosed rate sits well below PharmSee's broader pharmacy salary figures, but those figures aren't a fair comparison — they are dominated by salaried NHS pharmacist posts. Across 389 live salaried postings PharmSee tracked in the same window, the median advertised salary was £42,631, and PharmSee's separate hourly, community-only sample remains too small (n=3) to headline on its own.
Why this matters for candidates
A "manager" title on a pharmacy job board doesn't, by itself, tell you whether the employer expects a registered pharmacist, a trained non-pharmacist retail manager, or either. Rowlands' explicit labelling is unusual rather than standard practice — at every other chain PharmSee tracks, the answer sits in the job description or person specification rather than in the headline title. Anyone applying for a pharmacy manager role, particularly without a pharmacy degree, should check the "essential criteria" section of an advert before assuming the title alone rules them in or out.
