Of all the specialist pharmacy careers available within the NHS, oncology is the most visible in current job listings. PharmSee's sample of 200 of 512 NHS Jobs pharmacy vacancies in April 2026 contains nine cancer services roles — more than critical care, mental health, paediatrics and clinical trials combined.
The salary range spans from a Band 7 cancer and aseptic services pharmacist at £49,387 to an advanced specialist clinical pharmacist in breast cancer at £77,368. The spread reflects a career ladder with clearly defined rungs — and a ceiling that sits among the highest in hospital pharmacy.

What the Salary Data Shows
The entry point for oncology pharmacy is Band 7. Two roles in Swindon and Bath list at £49,387–£56,515 — the standard Band 7 range. These are the roles a pharmacist with two to three years of post-registration hospital experience would typically target as a first move into cancer services.
Band 8a is the established specialist level. Three roles — in Barnet, London and North Shields — list at £61,631–£74,896. The London NW3 role pays approximately £2,500 more than the Barnet equivalent at the same NHS trust, likely reflecting London weighting (High Cost Area Supplement). The North Shields role extends to £74,896 at the top of the range, suggesting Band 8a/8b boundary or a lead responsibility premium.
The salary ceiling is Band 8b. The Manchester breast cancer specialist role lists at £66,582–£77,368 — the highest advertised salary among the nine oncology listings and among the highest for any pharmacist role in PharmSee's NHS sample outside of chief or consultant pharmacist positions.
Locum rates offer a different comparison. The Watford role lists at £36.41 per hour. For a 37.5-hour NHS week, that translates to approximately £71,000 per annum — comparable to the top of Band 8a. However, locum pharmacists typically receive no pension, no annual leave entitlement, and no sick pay, so the true comparison is less favourable.
Geographic Spread
The nine oncology pharmacy listings span five English regions:
- South West: Bath, Swindon
- South East: Brighton, Watford, Barnet
- London: NW3
- North West: Manchester
- North East: North Shields
The Birmingham listing (bank/variable) is West Midlands but is a bank (zero-hours) position rather than a permanent role.
This spread suggests that oncology pharmacy demand is not concentrated in London teaching hospitals, as might be expected. Regional cancer centres in Swindon, Bath and North Shields are actively recruiting — a pattern that may reflect both the national distribution of cancer services and the difficulty of attracting specialist pharmacists to non-London locations.
The Career Ladder
Based on the listings, the typical oncology pharmacy career progression appears to be:
- Foundation/rotational pharmacist (Band 6, £37,338–£44,962) — hospital pharmacy rotation including a cancer services placement
- Cancer services pharmacist (Band 7, £49,387–£56,515) — first specialist role, typically requiring 2–3 years post-registration experience
- Senior specialist / lead pharmacist (Band 8a, £61,631–£71,148) — clinical leadership within a cancer centre
- Advanced specialist (Band 8b, £66,582–£77,368) — sub-specialty focus (e.g. breast cancer, paediatric oncology) or multi-site leadership
The jump from Band 7 to Band 8a — approximately £12,000–£15,000 at the midpoint — represents the largest single salary increase in the ladder. It also typically requires evidence of advanced clinical practice, prescribing qualifications, and published clinical audit or research activity.
The Aseptic Connection
Two of the nine roles explicitly mention aseptic services alongside cancer services. This is not coincidental: many chemotherapy drugs require aseptic preparation — compounding under sterile conditions in a licensed clean-room facility. Pharmacists who combine clinical oncology knowledge with aseptic preparation competence occupy a particularly specialised niche.
The Swindon role is titled "Cancer & Aseptic Services Pharmacist," suggesting the employer needs a single clinician who can span both functions. This dual-competence requirement may partially explain why oncology pharmacy has more listed vacancies than other specialties — the skill set is narrow and the training pipeline is long.
What This Means for Pharmacists
Oncology pharmacy offers the most clearly defined specialist career ladder in NHS hospital pharmacy, with more current vacancies than any other specialty in PharmSee's sample. The salary ceiling of £77,368 at Band 8b is exceeded only by consultant pharmacist and chief pharmacist roles.
For pharmacists considering this pathway, the data suggests:
- Regional cancer centres may offer faster progression than London teaching hospitals, where competition for specialist posts is typically more intense.
- Aseptic competence is a career differentiator. Roles that combine clinical oncology with aseptic services appear to be in particular demand.
- The Bank/locum route offers flexibility but at the cost of job security and pension benefits.
