NHS Bank Pharmacist Pay: Why the Same Rate Keeps Shifting

Three PharmSee snapshots of NHS Jobs' disclosed bank and locum pharmacist rates, taken months apart, show individual adverts persisting, vanishing and reappearing at a different price.

By PharmSee Editorial Team · ·

A pharmacist weighing up a bank or locum shift on NHS Jobs often has only one data point to go on: the rate printed on the advert in front of them. Three snapshots PharmSee has taken of the same corner of the NHS Jobs feed — in April, September and October 2026 — show how unreliable that single data point can be. Individual adverts have held an identical rate for six months, vanished for months at a time, or reappeared with a materially different number attached.

What the three readings show

Each reading used the same method: a 200-row NHS Jobs query for the keyword "pharmacist," filtered to listings priced by the hour, then narrowed to the subset that discloses a specific figure rather than marking the role "Negotiable." In April, 56 of 200 pharmacist listings were hourly-paid and 15 disclosed a rate. By September that had grown to 96 hourly listings with 20 disclosed rates. The most recent reading, on 28 October, found 104 hourly listings and again 20 disclosed rates — a reminder, covered in more depth in PharmSee's earlier piece on the denominator effect, that a shrinking disclosure share can sit alongside a flat disclosure count as the overall pool of listings grows.

What's new in this reading is what happened to specific, named advertised rates between snapshots:

EmployerApril 2026September 2026October 2026

NHS Professionals Limited (Advanced Pharmacist, Watford WD18)£36.41/hr£36.41/hr£32.49/hr

Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust is the one constant. Its Band 6/7 outpatient bank pharmacist rate has advertised at exactly £21.81 an hour in all three readings, across postings for both its Royal Free and Chase Farm outpatient sites. Among everything PharmSee has tracked in this corner of the market, it is the most stable single figure on record.

Hillingdon Hospital NHS Foundation Trust sits at the other extreme. Its Band 6 and Band 7 bank pharmacist rates (£28.64 and £34.86 an hour respectively) were the second- and third-highest disclosed figures in the April snapshot. Neither has appeared in a disclosed-rate listing since — not in September, and not in this latest October reading. The trust has not gone quiet on NHS Jobs generally: it has two substantive, non-bank pharmacist vacancies live in the current sample, advertised on an annual salary basis. What has disappeared, across two consecutive readings five months apart, is specifically a numerically disclosed bank rate. That could mean the roles were filled, the adverts were pulled, or bank cover is still being offered but priced as "Negotiable" rather than with a stated figure — PharmSee's data cannot distinguish between those explanations, only confirm that the specific number is no longer visible.

Practice Plus Group, the independent healthcare and justice-sector provider, shows a third pattern: a round-trip. Its two bank pharmacist adverts in April both advertised a flat £36.00 an hour — then-and-still the highest rate from a non-NHS-trust employer. Both postings were gone by September. In October, Practice Plus Group is back in the sample with bank and flexi-contract pharmacist roles in Ilford and Reading — but at £31.50 and £30.00 an hour, 12–17% below the April figure. Whether that reflects a genuine rate change, different sites commanding different pay, or simply two different postings inside a churning market is not something a single reading can settle.

NHS Professionals Limited, the NHS's own staffing bank, offers a smaller but similar lesson. Its top advertised rate for an Advanced Pharmacist at the same Watford postcode held at £36.41 an hour across both the April and September readings — long enough to look like a settled figure — before dropping to £32.49 an hour in October, a fall of almost 11%.

What this does and doesn't show

None of this is evidence about what any of these employers typically pay bank or locum pharmacists, and it should not be read that way. Each reading is a 200-row sample of a feed that NHS Jobs and PharmSee's aggregator cap in different ways, taken on a single day roughly five to eight weeks apart. A rate's disappearance from one reading to the next is far more likely to reflect an advert being filled, refreshed, or re-priced without a stated figure than any broader change in an employer's pay practice. PharmSee has not contacted Royal Free, Hillingdon, Practice Plus Group or NHS Professionals for comment on these specific figures, and none of the employers above should be read as paying more or less than any other — the sample is too small, and too shaped by which jobs happen to be live on a given day, to support that kind of comparison.

What the pattern does support is a narrower, practical point for anyone using job-board pay data — including PharmSee's own salary tool — to judge the market: a figure seen once is a snapshot, not a guarantee. The same slot can repeat for months, as Royal Free's has, or it can vanish and come back changed, as Practice Plus Group's and NHS Professionals' have. Only Hillingdon's figures, absent for two readings running, currently look more like a settled absence than noise — and even that will need a fourth reading to say with any confidence.

Methodology and sources

Figures are drawn from PharmSee's aggregation of the NHS Jobs board via jobs.nhs.uk, queried on 29 April, 30 September and 28 October 2026 using an identical keyword-and-filter method (200-row cap, "pharmacist" keyword, hourly-rate postings only, numerically disclosed rates only). Each reading captures a minority of the live NHS Jobs pharmacist feed — PharmSee's broader source-count tracker currently shows 566 active NHS Jobs postings in total, of which the 200-row keyword sample is one slice.
