That gives the city a vacancy intensity of 0.42 jobs per registered pharmacy — above the English average and comparable to Liverpool and Manchester.

But the employer mix tells a different story from those larger Northern cities.

Four sources, one dominant

Of Newcastle's 36 active vacancies, the distribution is strikingly concentrated:

Only four of PharmSee's 11 tracked sources are currently advertising in the Newcastle area. Seven employer sources — including several national chains — have zero active listings. By comparison, Leeds draws from eight different sources and Liverpool from six.

The largest single employer accounts for nearly half of all advertised roles. That level of employer concentration is unusual among major English cities: in Manchester the same employer represents 33% of local vacancies, in Birmingham just 19%.

The GP-to-pharmacy ratio

Newcastle NE1's three-mile catchment contains 66 GP practices and 85 registered pharmacies, producing a GP-to-pharmacy ratio of 0.78:1. That is below the 1.0 threshold — the city centre area appears well-supplied with pharmacy premises relative to GP practices.

However, as documented in previous PharmSee analysis, the NHS Digital pharmacy register for Newcastle includes a significant number of contractor codes that did not appear in the most recent NHSBSA dispensing dataset. This is common across cities that experienced major pharmacy chain withdrawals in 2023 and can reflect reporting lag, temporary closures, or operational changes. The effective ratio — accounting only for pharmacies with recent dispensing activity — is likely higher.

What roles are available

Newcastle's 36 vacancies span the full seniority range. The NHS Jobs component includes hospital pharmacist roles at the city's major trusts alongside primary care and community positions. The chain vacancies are predominantly dispenser and pharmacist roles, consistent with the national hiring pattern.

The single supermarket listing is notable for its rarity: only one national supermarket chain currently advertises a pharmacy role within 15 miles of Newcastle. In the North East, the supermarket pharmacy model appears less active as a hiring source than in Yorkshire or the Midlands.

Employer concentration and negotiating power

For job seekers, Newcastle's concentrated employer mix has practical implications. When one employer holds 47% of advertised vacancies, that employer's pay rates, hours and working conditions become the de facto market standard.
