Independent healthcare providers make up a small share of pharmacy vacancies advertised through NHS Jobs, but their hiring pattern is distinctive. A new sample taken by PharmSee on 5 October 2026 suggests the employer mix among four providers examined in May has changed little, while pay disclosure varies considerably between them.
How the sample was built
PharmSee's jobs database returned 513 unique pharmacy-related listings on 5 October 2026, drawn from three searches: "pharmacist", "pharmacy technician" and "pharmacy". Each search is capped at 200 results, so the sample is not a full census of vacancies.
Thirty of the 513 listings (5.8%) were posted by Practice Plus Group, Spire Healthcare, Nuffield Health or Ramsay Health Care, the same four operators examined in May. In that earlier sample of 520 listings, 25 (4.8%) came from the same group.
| Operator | Listings, May 2026 | Listings, October 2026 | Pharmacist roles | Technician roles | Listings showing a numeric pay figure |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Practice Plus Group | 17 | 20 | 3 | 17 | 20 of 20 |
| Spire Healthcare | 2 | 7 | 6 | 1 | 0 of 7 |
| Nuffield Health | 4 | 3 | 2 | 1 | 1 of 3 |
| Ramsay Health Care | 2 | 0 | 0 | 0 | Not applicable |
| Total | 25 | 30 | 11 | 19 | 21 of 30 |
One operator still accounts for most of the sample
Practice Plus Group accounts for 20 of the 30 listings (67%), against 17 of 25 (68%) in May. The concentration appears to be stable across the two samples rather than an artefact of one search. The NHS Jobs feed records 19 of the 20 under the employer name "Practice Plus Group - Health in Justice", a separate label that this analysis does not examine further.
Other movements are smaller and should be read with care. Spire Healthcare rose from two listings to seven, five of them bank posts. Nuffield Health fell from four listings to three. Ramsay Health Care, which had two listings in May, had none in this sample. Circle Health Group, which did not appear in May, had one: a clinical services manager role in pharmacy in Windsor.
Coverage of the NHS Jobs feed and the timing of postings can both move these counts, so the changes describe the two samples only. They are not evidence of a hiring trend.
Pay disclosure varies by operator
All 20 Practice Plus Group listings in the sample show a numeric figure. Technician posts other than bank roles range from £29,264 to £45,101 a year. A part-time Lead Pharmacy Technician post in Reading is advertised at £44,000 to £48,000. Three Lead Pharmacist posts at the same Reading location are advertised at £75,000 to £80,000 a year. With only three listings, that figure describes those posts, not a typical rate for the role.
Nuffield Health's one numeric listing is a bank pharmacy technician post in Eastleigh at £15 to £18 an hour. Its other two listings show "Negotiable". All seven Spire Healthcare listings in the sample show "Negotiable (per hour)" rather than a figure. The Circle Health Group listing is also marked "Negotiable".
The feed does not show whether these patterns reflect employer policy or how individual posts were entered. The sample should therefore be read as a description of these listings, not a verdict on any operator's pay practice. The Leicester bank pharmacist post that carried a published range in May does not appear in this sample.
What this means for pharmacists
Technician roles make up 19 of the 30 listings, so for many people in this part of the market the relevant comparison is with technician pay rather than pharmacist pay.
Where a listing shows no figure, it is reasonable to ask the employer for a band or range before interview. Where a figure is shown, check whether it describes a bank rate, a fixed-term contract or a permanent post, as the feed's titles do not always make this clear. Readers can browse current listings at PharmSee's jobs search and pharmacist pay data on the salary page.
Caveats
- The sample covers listings returned by three searches on a single day. It is not a complete census of independent-sector vacancies. Some independent providers advertise only on their own careers pages, which this sample does not capture.
- The job records used here do not carry posting dates in a form that allows listings to be grouped by quarter. The May and October figures are therefore two point-in-time samples, not comparable quarterly windows.
- With 30 listings across four operators, the sample is too small to support market-share conclusions. The percentages describe this sample only.
- Listings can be withdrawn, filled or reposted. Counts can change without any change in underlying hiring.
