When a workforce update says "there are almost 2,000 pharmacy vacancies open in the UK", it is counting adverts — not full-time jobs. Those are not the same thing, and the gap between them is wider than the headline figures suggest.
As of the most recent data snapshot (26 July 2026), PharmSee's live tracker recorded 1,919 active pharmacy vacancies across 11 public job sources. But a role advertised for 22.5 hours a week is not the same unit of hiring demand as one advertised for 40 hours. Stack up enough part-time adverts and the raw count drifts away from the number of full-time-equivalent (FTE) staff the sector is actually trying to recruit.
This analysis does something the raw leaderboards do not: it converts the headline count into FTE wherever the underlying job adverts disclose their working hours — and is honest about the large share of the market where they do not.
The headline: 1,919 adverts across 11 sources
The starting point is the raw vacancy count. These are advert headcounts, not full-time posts.

To turn adverts into FTE you need the advertised weekly hours. Here the sources fall into three tiers: those that publish exact hours, those that publish only a full-time / part-time band, and those that publish nothing about hours at all.
Tier 1: where hours are visible, about a fifth of the count is part-time
Three feeds expose exact weekly hours on the advert — and the effect of converting them to FTE is measurable. Throughout, one full-time post is counted as a 37.5-hour week (the standard NHS Agenda for Change full-time week, and also the single most common hours value in the Boots data). Each advert's FTE is its weekly hours divided by 37.5, capped at 1.0, so a 40-hour advert still counts as one full-time post rather than more.
Boots publishes exact weekly hours in a structured field on 190 of a 200-record sample. The advertised hours average 29.8 per week, with a median of 37.5 — and 47.9% of the sampled roles are advertised below 35 hours. On these figures the average Boots advert is worth roughly 0.78 FTE. Applied to the 558 live Boots adverts, that is about 435 full-time-equivalent posts — roughly 123 fewer than the raw count.
Morrisons discloses exact hours on every one of its 41 adverts (a full census, comfortably under the sampling ceiling). Advertised hours average 31.6 per week, median 36.75, with 41.5% below 35 hours — an average of about 0.82 FTE, or roughly 33 FTE across the 41 adverts.
Asda writes hours into the advert title on 17 of 38 roles (for example "Pharmacist – 30 hours"). Where stated, the hours average 30.6 per week and 15 of the 17 sit below 35 hours; the remaining 21 adverts state no hours and cannot be converted.
Taken together, the three chains where hours are actually visible account for 637 adverts — about a third of the whole market. Converting that segment to FTE removes roughly 134 posts, or about a fifth (21%) of the segment. That single fifth, from just three chains, is already worth about 7% of the entire 1,919 headline.

Tier 2: banded hours — a directional signal only
Two more feeds tell you whether a role is full or part time, but not the exact hours — so they support a direction of travel, not a precise haircut.
- Well (345 adverts) tags each role full-time or part-time in a structured field. In a 200-record sample, 15% are part-time, with a further four roles tagged zero-hours. Exact hours are hidden, so the size of the part-time discount cannot be measured — only that one exists.
- Superdrug (42 adverts) is split 24 full-time to 18 part-time — 43% part-time, the highest part-time share of any feed here, but again with no hours attached.
- Tesco (77 adverts) flags part-time in the advert title on 17 roles (22%), plus six fixed-term. Because only the part-time side is flagged and no hours are given, 22% is a floor, not the full picture.
Even a cautious reading of these three points the same way as the measured tier: the true full-time-equivalent demand sits comfortably below the advert count.
Tier 3: the 43% you cannot measure at all
The largest problem is what is missing. Five sources — NHS Jobs (546), Rowlands (178), Cohens (55), Weldricks (24) and Day Lewis (15) — expose no working-hours signal at all. Cohens' structured field carries the role, not the hours; Rowlands leaves it empty; NHS Jobs adverts vary case by case. Together these 818 adverts make up 42.6% of the market, and every one of them is held at full-time by default in any count that ignores hours.
That is the measurement floor. Because nearly half the market hides its hours, no single exact FTE figure for the whole sector is defensible — and that limitation is itself the finding. Any "X thousand pharmacy vacancies" number you read is a headcount of adverts in which an unknown, non-trivial share are part-time.
What this means if you read vacancy numbers
For job seekers, the practical takeaway is that the market is more part-time than the headlines imply, especially across the retail multiples. For owners, managers and workforce planners, a raw vacancy count overstates the full-time capacity the sector is trying to fill. On the third of the market that can be measured, the overstatement is about a fifth; the honest sector-wide figure is lower than 1,919 but cannot be pinned to a single number while 43% of adverts hide their hours. When benchmarking demand, count hours, not adverts.

Caveats
- Sampling. Boots, NHS Jobs and Well are read at a 200-record ceiling; the other eight sources are full censuses. FTE rates for the capped feeds are computed on the sample and applied to the full advert count, which assumes the sample's hours mix is representative.
- Full-time reference. One FTE is defined here as 37.5 hours; a small number of adverts specify 40-hour full-time weeks, which this method still counts as a single post (capped at 1.0), so the haircut is conservative.
- No double-counting adjustment. Advert counts are not de-duplicated for relief or multi-site roles that may recur, and no attempt is made to age out stale posts beyond the source feeds' own expiry handling.
- Directional tiers. The Well, Superdrug and Tesco figures show that part-time work exists at scale but cannot quantify its FTE weight; the 43% no-signal tier cannot be adjusted at all.
The single clean number in all of this is the raw one — 1,919 adverts. Every step toward "how many full-time jobs is that really?" makes the figure smaller and less certain. Both facts matter: the count is real, and it is not the same as full-time demand.
