If you are searching for a counter or dispensary role in a UK pharmacy, the job title you type into a search box may not be the one your ideal employer actually uses. According to PharmSee's tracking of live vacancies across 11 UK pharmacy job sources, snapshotted on 17 September 2026, the entry-level dispensary role — checking prescriptions in, assembling items, working the counter — is advertised under at least four different titles depending on the chain, with correspondingly different levels of pay disclosure.
Boots, the single largest employer in PharmSee's tracked dataset with 558 active vacancies, lists "Dispenser" as its most common job title by a wide margin: 117 of a 200-listing sample (58.5%) carried that exact title, more than double the next most common Boots title, "Pharmacist" (56 listings). None of the 117 Boots "Dispenser" listings in the sample disclosed a pay figure.
Well Pharmacy, which had 367 active vacancies at the same snapshot, used the word "Dispenser" in precisely zero of a 200-listing sample. Its closest equivalent role is titled "Qualified Pharmacy Assistant" — 25 listings, or 12.5% of the sample — and every one of those 25 listings disclosed an hourly rate, £12.71 to £12.83 depending on contract type.

Rowlands and Superdrug are smaller employers in the tracked dataset, so their full active vacancy sets fall under PharmSee's 200-listing sampling ceiling — those two rows are a complete count, not a sample. Boots and Well's larger vacancy volumes mean the 200-listing figures above are samples of a bigger active pool, not a full census.
The Rowlands ladder is the clearest paper trail
Rowlands is the only chain in this comparison that prices the trainee-to-qualified step explicitly. Its 22 "Trainee Pharmacy Dispenser" listings all advertise £12.82 an hour; its 35 "Pharmacy Dispenser" listings (the qualified grade) mostly sit at £13.02–£13.14 an hour; and its two "Multisite Pharmacy Dispenser" listings add a £1.00-an-hour supplement on top of the base rate for staff covering more than one branch. That is a fully disclosed, three-step pay ladder — trainee, qualified, multisite — inside a single job-title family, published in more detail than any of the other three chains in this comparison.
Why the vocabulary gap matters for job-hunting
A candidate typing "pharmacy dispenser jobs" into a search engine or job board will surface Boots, Rowlands and Superdrug listings by title match — but not Well's, because Well simply does not use the word "Dispenser" for the role. Someone relying on title-keyword search alone could miss a large share of live Well vacancies for what is functionally the same job. The inverse is also true: a candidate searching "pharmacy assistant" may skip past Boots and Rowlands postings entirely.
On pay, the gap is just as wide. Boots — the chain with the most "Dispenser" vacancies in this dataset by a large margin — is also the one publishing the least pay information for the role in its adverts. Well and Rowlands both disclose an hourly rate on effectively every dispensary-grade listing PharmSee tracked at this snapshot. This is consistent with a broader pattern PharmSee has measured across community pharmacy: advertised pay transparency tends to vary more by individual employer than by role or region.
Methodology
Figures are drawn from PharmSee's live aggregation of 11 UK pharmacy job sources, snapshotted 17 September 2026 (dataset total: 1,941 active vacancies). Boots and Well figures come from a 200-listing sample per source (PharmSee's search endpoint caps at 200 records per query); Rowlands (179 active) and Superdrug (48 active) fall under that ceiling, so their figures reflect the full active listing set at snapshot time. "Pay disclosed" means the listing's pay field contained a genuine numeric figure — a placeholder value or a phrase such as "Competitive" was not counted as disclosure.
Caveats
- Boots' and Well's percentages describe the 200-listing sample pulled at snapshot time, not their full active vacancy pool (558 and 367 respectively) — the true chain-wide share of "Dispenser"/"Qualified Pharmacy Assistant" titles could differ modestly from the sampled figures.
- Superdrug's pay field returned the placeholder value "1" on every "Dispenser NVQ" listing rather than a rate. PharmSee cannot confirm from this feed alone whether that reflects Superdrug's own advert or a data-capture limitation, so it has been excluded from the disclosure comparison rather than counted as a confirmed non-disclosure.
