The UK pharmacy job market is dominated by two hiring powerhouses: Boots and the NHS. Together they account for more than three-quarters of all tracked vacancies. But the smaller chains tell an equally important story about where the sector is heading.

What the Numbers Tell Us
Boots: The Volume Leader
With 537 active vacancies, Boots posts more pharmacy jobs than any other single employer. These range from dispenser roles at high street branches (Cheltenham, Bristol, Bromley) to care services customer partners. Boots' hiring volume reflects both its scale (over 1,800 pharmacy branches) and ongoing turnover in community pharmacy.
Previous regional analysis shows Boots concentrating vacancies in:
- Yorkshire: 20 roles around Leeds alone
- South West: 23 roles around Bristol
- North East: 19 roles around Newcastle
NHS Jobs: The Clinical Pipeline
The 519 NHS vacancies span the full Agenda for Change spectrum. PharmSee's analysis identifies roles from Band 5 rotational pharmacists up to Band 8a specialist positions:
- Band 6: ~40 tracked roles (rotational, newly qualified)
- Band 7: ~40 tracked roles (specialist, advanced)
- Band 8a: 4 tracked roles (senior specialist — Cancer Services at Royal Free London, Thrombosis at UHB, EPMA at Watford)
The presence of Band 8a roles signals demand for clinical specialisation — these are not volume hires but targeted recruitment for hard-to-fill posts.
The Cohens Anomaly
Cohens, a 170-branch chain concentrated in Northern England, holds 5% of all vacancies despite having a fraction of Boots' branch count. With 69 active roles (many for pharmacy assistants and checking technicians), Cohens' hiring rate per branch significantly outpaces the major multiples. In the Leeds area alone, Cohens posted 18 vacancies in recent weeks — comparable to Boots' 20 despite having far fewer local branches.
Supermarket Pharmacies: Quiet but Consistent
Asda (54), Tesco (43), and Morrisons (33) collectively account for 130 vacancies — 9.4% of the market. Tesco's listings are notably uniform: "Duty Pharmacy Manager" roles across dozens of stores (Abingdon, Andover, Buckingham...), suggesting a systematic rollout or restructuring of pharmacy management.
The Long Tail
Rowlands (20), Day Lewis (15), and Well (10) round out the table. Well's low count is notable given its ~700-branch network — either they're well-staffed or recruiting through channels PharmSee doesn't yet track.
Chain vs NHS: Different Markets
The divide between community chains and NHS isn't just about employer — it's about career trajectory:
| Factor | Community Chains | NHS |
|---|---|---|
| Median salary | £32,175 | £42,631 |
| Entry route | Dispensing → management | Band 5 → specialisation |
| Career ceiling | Area manager / superintendent | Consultant pharmacist (8c+) |
| Volume hiring | High (dispensers, assistants) | Moderate (clinical roles) |
| Job security | Variable (closures risk) | Strong (public sector) |
The £10,456 salary gap between community and NHS medians (PharmSee data, 384 roles) explains much of the flow of talent toward hospital pharmacy.
What This Means for Job Seekers
If you're looking for volume and availability, Boots and NHS Jobs are the obvious starting points. But don't overlook regional specialists like Cohens (Northern England), Weldricks (South Yorkshire), or Peak Pharmacy (East Midlands, 31 stores) — they often offer faster progression in smaller teams.
