Where you work matters as much as what you do. Our analysis of 384 pharmacy salary data points from live job listings reveals a £18,828 gap between the highest and lowest-paying English regions — that's a 58% premium for working in London over the South West.

Key Findings
London's Dominance — But Not the Highest Single Salary
London's median of £51,468 is 21% above the national figure of £42,631. The capital benefits from High Cost Area Supplements on NHS Agenda for Change bands and competitive community pharmacy rates. However, the single highest salary tracked is £91,713 in the East Midlands — a Band 8c Associate Chief Pharmacist role at Nottingham University Hospitals.
The West Midlands Paradox
The West Midlands shows the biggest gap between median (£34,762) and mean (£43,551) — a £8,789 spread. This signals a polarised market: many Band 5–6 roles pulling the median down, while specialist hospital positions at University Hospitals Birmingham push the upper quartile to £56,062. If you're a specialist pharmacist, the West Midlands punches above its median weight.
The £32,640 Floor
Both the North East and South West share the lowest median at £32,640. But the composition differs:
- North East: smaller sample (21 roles) with a strong upper quartile at £51,250, suggesting fewer but more varied opportunities
- South West: larger sample (45 roles) with a compressed range — upper quartile only reaches £42,631, indicating a more uniformly lower pay market
Community vs NHS: A National Gap
Nationally, the NHS median sits at £42,631 across 381 roles, while the community pharmacy median is £32,175 — a £10,456 gap (24% less). Community pharmacy salary data remains sparse (only 3 data points), but the direction is clear: NHS roles consistently pay more at every band level.
What Drives Regional Variation?
- Cost-of-living supplements — London and the South East benefit from NHS HCAS payments worth £4,400–£6,700 annually
- Trust competition — regions with multiple large teaching hospitals (London, West Midlands, East Midlands) create bidding wars for specialist pharmacists
- Community pharmacy density — areas with more pharmacies per capita tend to have lower community pay due to competition for contract income
- Vacancy pressure — regions struggling to recruit offer enhanced rates; the North East's high upper quartile reflects this
How to Use This Data
If you're job hunting, don't just look at the median — check the upper quartile. A region with a lower median but high UQ (like the West Midlands or North East) may offer better prospects for experienced or specialist pharmacists.
