The 16 NE1 Boots branches

NHS Digital's contractor register has 16 Boots codes inside a 3-mile ring of NE1 1AA (Newcastle Grey Street). Only 8 of them show any dispensing revenue over the last 12 months. The other 8 are shell codes — real legal entities on the register, but not operating pharmacies.

£122,588 per operating branch is the second-highest Boots per-branch operating revenue in our atlas, trailing only Plymouth's £150,572. The Newcastle Boots estate is half-closed on the register, but the live half is performing well above average.

What the half-closure pattern means

The two ends of the Boots city atlas are now well-mapped:

Newcastle is the largest Boots footprint in absolute terms — 16 codes — but its live operating count (8) is identical to Sheffield (8). The retreat is not a Northern story or a market-size story. It is specifically about codes on the register that haven't been pruned post-2023 closures.

Why the NHS Digital register shows ghost codes

Boots sold or shut somewhere in the region of 300 branches in 2023. The NHS Digital contractor register is updated on a rolling basis, and contractor codes for closed pharmacies are only removed when the successor operator (or, in the case of clean closures, the contractor itself) notifies the register. In practice this lag runs for years — cycle 14's Liverpool analysis found zero-revenue Lloyds codes still listed 18 months after the Lloyds exit.

The same lag is now visible in the Boots North East estate. The eight NE1 Boots ghost codes are the 2023-2024 closures that have not yet been pruned. They inflate naive "Boots branches in Newcastle" counts by 100% against the live footprint.
