The practical challenge
Pharmacists have always managed patients who arrive with information gathered from the internet. What makes AI-generated diagnoses different is their specificity and apparent authority. A Google search returns a list of possibilities; ChatGPT returns a confident-sounding narrative that reads like a clinical assessment.
This creates a specific professional challenge. The patient believes they have an answer. They may be right — AI tools can synthesise symptom patterns across a wider knowledge base than any individual clinician. Or they may have received a plausible-sounding but incorrect diagnosis based on incomplete or inaccurately reported symptoms.
What pharmacists can do
